Monterey County encompasses some of the world's most beautiful scenery. It provides peace and
nature, excitement, sports, enjoyment and culture.
With approximately 3,324 square miles, the County is larger than the states of Rhode Island and
Delaware. Its population of approximately 371,000 enjoys a wide range of natural environments,
microclimates and lifestyles. The area produces a mild, spring-like climate year-round. Average
rain is 14-18 inches annually. Average high temperature in summer is 68 degrees along the Coast
and a little higher inland.
The Salinas Valley, an agricultural miracle 150 miles long and between 10 and 20 miles wide, is
the centerpiece of the County. It is nestled between the coastal range of Los Padres National
forest and the inland mountains which include the Pinnacles.
The chief industries are agriculture and tourism.
