Land Surveyor and Engineer Frequently Asked Questions
Q.   What types of reference materials are permitted into the exam?
A.   For Principles and Practices (PE) open book examination; published books, codes, tables, standards and ordinances may be used. Bound notes and mimeographed materials may also be used. ALL REFERENCE MATERIALS MUST BE BOUND PERMANENTLY. BOUND is defined as stitched, glued, or fastened by spiral binders, plastic snap binder, brads or screw posts. Materials stapled together and in ring binders are also acceptable. Loose papers or papers held together by rubber bands are not permissible. No tablets, unbound tablets, notes or papers are permitted in the examination room. Candidates are NOT permitted to exchange reference materials or aids during the examination. USE OF SCRATCH PAPER IS PROHIBITED. Any preliminary work can be done in the margins of the test book or in the solution pamphlet for PE candidates. TABS, FLAGS, and POST-ITS will be allowed in reference materials for PE exam only.
For the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination, the only reference material permitted is the NCEES supplied Reference Handbook. This handbook will be distributed for candidate's use for each session of the examination. Do not write in this copy and do not bring your own copy to the examination. Reference handbooks are available at www.ncees.org.
Q.   I have previously taken the PE exam. How long is my eligibility application good for? Do I need to resend my transcripts, etc. to the Department of Regulation and Licensing?
A.   No, you do not need to reapply with the Department of Regulation and Licensing. If you have ever been approved to sit for the PE exam, you are approved for as long as you apply for that exam. There is only one approval necessary from the Department of Regulation and Licensing for any exam.
Q.   I am moving to a new mailing address. However, I don't know yet what that address will be. How can I make sure my file is updated?
A.   You can change your address at any time by submitting the information in writing to CPS and to the Department of Regulation and Licensing. There is also a form located on the back cover of the candidate guide and a form on the back of your admission card. You can also e-mail your change of address to CPS at infota@cps.ca.gov and the Wisconsin board at renee.vance@drl.state.wi.us.
Q.   What if I don't receive my admittance card and scheduling letter from you or I lose it? Will I be able to sit for the exam?
A.   If you are registered for the exam, you will be allowed to sit without the admittance card. The proctors will have an authorized roster with your name on it and blank admittance cards which they will fill out with your information. However, it is important that the candidate identification number assigned to you is transcribed accurately onto the admittance card issued to you at the test site. If you do not receive your scheduling packet approximately three weeks prior to the test date, you should call CPS at (916) 263-3624.
