INTERPRETER PROGRAM INFORMATION
There are no minimum requirements to take the state interpreter tests. However, applicants are cautioned that State Certified Administrative Hearing and Medical Interpreters must possess a level of expertise in both languages that far exceeds that required for informal bilingual conversation. Applicants are encouraged to complete formal, college-level course work and training in both languages and all modes of interpretation before applying for the examination.

CPS, a joint powers public agency, administers the State Certification Exam for Administrative Hearing Interpreters on behalf of the California State Personnel Board (SPB). CPS, formed in 1935 as a division of the SPB, became a separate public agency in 1985. CPS serves public agencies and nonprofit organizations throughout the United States and abroad by providing occupational testing and related services.
