Proctor Instructions - Simultaneous Interpretation
"The third and final part of the exam is the simultaneous interpreting component. This part of the examination is designed to test your ability to interpret accurately in the simultaneous mode. The text is recorded at approximately 120 words per minute.
During the actual examination you will use a headset to listen to the instructions and the simultaneous text. The instructions for the simultaneous are recorded in ENGLISH. The exam material is also in English for you to interpret into Spanish only. You will be able to adjust the volume, but you will not be able to stop the recording during the test. If you stumble over or forget a word, it may be best to leave it rather than to lag behind.
Please begin interpreting after this brief pause."
(Proctor pauses for five seconds and begins recording.)
(The Simultaneous Interpretation document follows.)
Simultaneous Interpretation (Listen)
Mrs. Serrano, please pay close attention to my dictation of the report I will send to your insurance company. Please let me know if there is anything you disagree with or do not understand.
Patient is a 5'4", 36-year-old female weighing 145 pounds. Medical history shows no hospitalizations and no fractures. She was diagnosed as having adult-onset diabetes but controls her symptoms through diet and medication. Patient has generally enjoyed good health as an adult but has recently begun experiencing migraine headaches and lower back pain, aside from the discomfort derived from her recent work-related injury.
Mrs. Serrano suffered injury to her right shoulder six months ago when emptying a heavier-than-usual trash container at her job. She did not seek medical treatment but applied heat pads to the site of pain and took over-the-counter pain killers. Initial symptoms, which included mild pain, edema with some bruising, and a slight loss of function, worsened over a two-week period. When patient finally came into the office, she presented severe pain, pronounced edema, muscle spasm, marked tenderness, joint disability, and loss of function.
Diagnostic tests performed at this office were stress x-rays that allowed us to evaluate the severity of injury and an MRI that confirmed the extent of the ligamentous injury.
Mrs. Serrano will be placed on temporary total disability for a period of two months in order to let the injured area rest. This period of immobilization will be followed by range-of-motion and muscle-strengthening exercises as per the indications of the assigned physical therapist.
