The examination covers a wide range of important language skills. This section of the study guide provides information on the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities covered by the test. The examination contains 155 questions, and you will have four hours to complete it.

Each section begins with a brief description of the content area. For example, the section labeled "Spanish Grammar and Word Usage" is designed to measure your knowledge of grammar and word usage in Spanish.

  1. English Vocabulary

    This section is comprised of 20 questions. Major knowledge, skill, and ability areas include:

    • Knowledge of a broad range of English vocabulary on a multitude of topics
    • Knowledge of agency-specific/specialized vocabulary
    • Knowledge of correct spelling of words

  1. English Grammar and Word Usage

    This section is comprised of 20 questions. Major knowledge, skill, and ability areas include:

    • Knowledge of punctuation and its effect on meaning
    • Knowledge of rules of grammar
    • Knowledge of correct spelling
    • Skill in distinguishing between good and poor usage
    • Skill in identifying incorrect punctuation
    • Skill in identifying incorrect grammar
    • Skill in identifying incorrect spelling

  1. English Reading Comprehension

    This section is comprised of 15 questions. Major knowledge, skill, and ability areas include:

    • Knowledge of a broad range of English vocabulary on a multitude of topics
    • Skill in eliminating options that contain information having no corollary in source text
    • Skill in recognizing linguistic nuances
    • Ability to identify parameters within text
    • Ability to extract information from text
    • Ability to scan for specific information
    • Ability to read English

  1. English to Spanish Vocabulary Translation

    This section is comprised of 15 questions. Major knowledge, skill, and ability areas include:

    • Knowledge of terms in the administrative hearing setting and/or the medical setting in both English and Spanish
    • Knowledge of a broad range of vocabulary on a multitude of topics in both English and Spanish
    • Knowledge of correct spelling of words

  1. Spanish Vocabulary

    This section is comprised of 20 questions. Major knowledge, skill, and ability areas include:

    • Knowledge of a broad range of Spanish vocabulary on a multitude of topics

    • Knowledge of approximate and precise equivalents in both languages
    • Skill in writing Spanish
    • Ability to appreciate the effects of verb tense and mood differences on meaning
    • Ability to distinguish between valid and invalid renderings of a variety of texts
    • Ability to make instant adjustments for changes of meaning between texts
    • Ability to quickly comprehend a written text
    • Ability to distinguish between true and false cognates
    • Ability to spot grammatical inconsistencies
